10 Most Rewarding Open-World Video Games

6. Horizon Forbidden West

Guerrilla Games

Horizon Zero Dawn was arguably the greatest game of 2017, which is particularly commendable considering that it was such a marked departure from the bleak FPS mayhem of Guerrilla Games' Killzone saga.

Naturally, they outdid themselves with Horizon Forbidden West.

While just about every sequel looks better than its predecessor(s), Horizon Forbidden West’s awe-inspiringly detailed and diverse visuals are particularly pleasing because they enhance what’s already a fascinating depiction of a post-apocalyptic United States.

It doubles down on its precursor’s propensity for rewarding sightseeing (regardless of what missions and collectibles players are discovering in the process). With enhanced aerial traversal, newfound underwater exploration, and a host of new machines to meet, there’s far more enthralling discoverability.

On that note, gameplay improvements and additions such as the Pullcaster, the Shieldwing, fresh elemental damage types (acid and plasma), retooled skill trees, and amended focus abilities mean that controlling Aloy and battling foes is much more fun, complex, and malleable.

Plus, the storyline once again merges plot progression and personal moments beautifully, with returning characters and newcomers alike adding relatability and depth to the series’ expansive lore.

Although Horizon Zero Dawn didn’t necessarily need a follow-up, we’re very happy that it got one.
