10 Most Rewarding Open-World Video Games

5. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Simply put, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s transition into absolute open-world autonomy revolutionized the franchise and redefined the style.

Not only can ostensive protagonist Punished/Venom Snake attempt missions in any order he sees fit, but he can approach each one in dozens of ways. Maybe he’ll be completely stealthy by subduing (or capturing) enemies as he quietly progresses toward his main goal. Or, maybe he’ll go in guns blazing and cause unmitigated destruction and death.

Of course, there are plenty of other choices to make within those extremes, and with the option of relying on one of several distinct human or animal companions for help – as well as incorporating lots of cool unlockable tools – the possibilities are close to infinite.

Mother Base is incredibly changeable and entertaining, too, as you never know what absurd things your teammates may be saying or doing. Along the same lines, most NPCs will react to your actions and changes to their environment, sparking drastically unpredictable playthroughs.

Even the narrative is emblematically silly yet disturbing, flashy, and convoluted, so it’ll keep you fascinated and confused the whole time.

Despite its unfinished state, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is still highly enjoyable.
