10 Most Shameful Video Game Releases Of All Time
1. Infestation: Survivor Stories
To call Infestation: Survivor Stories an awful game doesn't do it justice. Every facet of this z-list zomfest is gloriously incompetent, unprofessional, and unethical.
Firstly, the open-world MMO suffers from every negative attribute players have come to expect e.g. an unbalanced micro-transaction system, poor user interaction, frame-rate problems, etc.
But that doesn't cover the half of it. On launch day, players noticed many advertised features were absent, including 100 player servers, private servers, and a skill tree. Instead of taking these criticisms onboard, creator, Sergey Titov, falsely declared these promised features were never intended for launch, but during an unspecified time in the future.
The first available map was advertised as 100 sq km, even though rudimentary measurements (and eyes) proved it was one-tenth that size. Set on performing the worst damage control in gaming history, Titov doubled down, saying the publicised measurements were correct.
Somehow, it gets worse. Forum users were banned for criticising the game. Developers were accused of bullying and bribing people who spoke about Infestation in a negative light. Hackers infiltrated databases, gaining access to passwords, character names, and IP addresses. And when Titov directly insulted consumers, it felt like it was his plan to torpedo the project from the get-go.
Although there's plenty more to riff on, the point has been made. Infestation was such a train wreck, the servers were deservingly taken down four years after its release.
