10 Most Shocking E3 Reveals EVER
8. The PlayStation Is $299, The PlayStation 3 Is $599 (E3 1995 & 2006)
Sony's history at E3 is proof that company hubris tends to come in waves and cycles. They've had two especially jaw-dropping price reveals over the years, their first coming when they unveiled the PlayStation at E3 1995.
Though Sega turned heads during their showcase by announcing that the Sega Saturn - which had already been out in Japan for several months - was being released that very day in the U.S. for $399, Sony retorted with an all-timer E3 mic drop.
During Sony's conference, SCEA President Steve Race took to the stage and simply said "299" before leaving the podium to a round of cheers, undercutting the Saturn by an entire $100 and basically handing Sony the generation on a silver platter.
But they wound up on the opposite end of a price announcement in 2006, when Sony made the nightmarish decision to reveal that the 60GB version of the PS3 - as in, the version everyone actually wanted - would cost $599.
In addition to the Xbox 360 launching the year prior for $200 less, Sony further screwed up by suggesting players should just work more hours to afford the PS3.
As a result, Sony spent almost the entire generation on the back-foot trying to catch up to Microsoft and Nintendo.
In near-equal measure, Sony left fans stunned at these totally polar pricing reveals.
