10 Most Shocking Moments In Mortal Kombat History

8. Playing Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

Now, let's look at a completely different type of shocking moment. In 1997, Midway Games released Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. It was the first entry in the franchise that wasn't a conventional fighting game since it had action-adventure sections that required timing jumps and puzzle solving.

Mythologies wasn't just a random spin-off that the developers created to make a quick buck. Co-creator, John Tobias, wanted to create a more plot-driven story to help flesh out the characters. The game had live-action cut-scenes since Tobias believed this was a more effective way to develop the plot than using text.

The developers also intended Mythologies to launch a separate side series (similar to how Mario Kart branched off from the Super Mario franchise). Each game would have focused on different characters in the MK universe like Sonya Blade and Liu Kang.

Sadly, anyone who had the misfortune to purchase his game was in for a shock. Mortal Kombat Mythologies is the worst MK game. Not one of the worst. It is The Worst. Upon its release, it was reviled for its laughable acting, absurd difficulty curve, imprecise controls, and boundless glitches. Nowadays, it's hailed as one of the worst games ever made.
