It's not what this cult do in the game that makes them so harrowing. Rather, it's what they plan to do, and the dark intentions of the one they serve.

The player has to go out of their way to find the lair of this secret organisation. Not only is the sanctuary itself in quite a difficult-to-reach location, but before you're even allowed in, you have to defile another creed's sanctuary using a Stained Page, then allow yourself to be killed by the guardians who come to defend it.

The Bloody Writ you obtain grants you passage into The Blackest Vault, where you are given the option to join the Order of the Betrayer. A secretive cult that worship Azredak, a dark god that lusts for eternal pain and suffering, joining the Order of the Betrayer basically makes you their primary weapon and link to the rest of the world, as no other members seem to venture outside of the Vault.

In this instance, then, it comes down to how evil the player themselves are. Do you join and singlehandedly "mete the master's wicked will", or carry on in your mission and leave well enough alone?
