The danger that these masked sociopaths pose is partly due to their sheer number. Largely independent from the Empire, they are practically free to do whatever they want, and were it not for their heinous acts of violence and oppression, the organisation would probably be seen more as a full-blown religion than a cult of fanatics.

Basically, the whole reason for the Abbey's existence is to purge the world of The Outsider, and all who show even the slightest bit interest in them. They believe that any trace of the Void leads to corruption and ruin, and anyone who does not conform to their rigid ways is considered a 'heretic', soon to be hunted down and killed.

The Abbey's acolytes, Overseers, are spread all across The Isles, looking for signs of heresy wherever they can find them. Their manic devotion to expunging all Void magic drives them to slaughter whole families, tackle innocents to the ground in the street, and torture their captives with magic-suppressing music boxes.

It's the rigidity of their views that makes them so dangerous, and by calling themselves The Abbey of the Everyman, they clearly think they are a force for good in the world. The Overseers do not even hesitate to cast out their own leader after he is branded with the Mark of the Heretic.
