10 Most Tear-Jerking Deaths In Video Games

8. Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon - Bruno

Probably the most obscure moment on this list, Bruno's death shows how a single great moment can elevate an otherwise mediocre experience.

Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon is not a good adventure game. The third entry in the Broken Sword franchise saw the series enter the third dimension with all the grace of a wasted freshman stumbling into the back of a taxi.

Awkward controls, frustrating QTEs and a bizarre obsession with crate-pushing puzzles (check out the opening and closing minutes in the above video for proof) meant Sleeping Dragon was about as much fun as getting an unanesthetized root canal.

Thank God for Bruno, then. Like a dentist quoting Wordsworth, Bruno's sacrifice is a rare moment of beauty in an otherwise torturous experience. Eighteen years after the game's release, Bruno's decision to give up his own life in exchange for his companions still lingers in the memory.

A flawed human being, Bruno's parting words - "I am not really ready for death, but I am perhaps ready for redemption" - encapsulate his character perfectly, and resonate with anyone who has ever been desperate to make amends for their mistakes.

Pity it's followed up with yet another sodding crate-pushing puzzle.
