Buckle up, 'cause this one gets complicated.

Steins Gate 0 is a prequel to Steins Gate, arguably the most popular visual novel of the last 10 years. Steins Gate 0 starts near the climax of the first game, with main character Okabe having accidentally stabbed Makise Kurisu, his lover, while attempting to kill her murderer.

That's not the death this entry is discussing.

See, the story of Stein's Gate runs across two timelines. In one timeline, Kurisu always dies. In the other, Okabe's best friend Mayuri is killed in Kurisu's stead. What follows is Okabe's desparate attempt to find Stein's Gate - the timeline where neither of them have to die.

The bulk of Steins Gate 0 sees Okabe staying in the timeline where Kurisu is killed, his will broken by his many failed attempts to save her. However, around halfway through the game he travels to the alternate timeline, where Mayuri dies and Kurisu lives. Except Kurisu herself is having none of it.

Berating Okabe for even thinking about abandoning his friend, Kurisu gives him the push he needs to go back to the other timeline. Telling him to think of their brief reunion as a beautiful dream, Kurisu gives Okabe the courage he needs to go back to the original timeline and try to move on.

This is just one heartrending moment among many in Steins Gate, and if you're a fan of narrative-heavy games you owe it to yourself to at least check the series out.
