10 Most Tear-Jerking Deaths In Video Games

4. Doki Doki Literature Club - Sayori

Of all the entries on the list, this is the hardest to write about.

Doki Doki Literature Club gained instant infamy on its release back in 2017, luring many a player in with its anime whimsy before revealing its teeth. What starts as a cutesy dating sim quickly turns into a fourth wall breaking nightmare, and its the death of Sayori that starts the game's descent into horror.

Towards the end of the first act, the quirky, upbeat Sayori reveals that she actually suffers from crippling depression. Her sunny, optimistic persona is an act she puts on to keep herself from going under, but she knows she can't keep it up forever.

So, the player is given a choice - accept her wish to become her boyfriend, or decide to stay as friends.

Choose the latter, and Sayori snaps. Laughing madly, she runs away from the protagonist and the next time you see her, she has already hung herself in her bedroom. Make the former choice, and Sayori realises that being in a relationship won't cure her depression - she mournfully declares "Why won't the rain clouds go away?", and commits suicide after returning home.

This is a heartbreakingly authentic take on mental health. There are no silver bullets or magic words in the fight against depression. It's an ongoing struggle each and every day, and if the person suffering decides to end their life rather than continue the fight then, realisitically, there's nothing anyone can do to stop them.
