10 Most Terrifying Video Game Zombies

9. Crimson Head - Resident Evil Remake

Resident Evil has traditionally favoured the classic slow zombie, but in the 2002 Resident Evil remake they introduced the Crimson Head, which is easily distinguished by its blood-red skin.

If a regular zombie is killed and left alone, they will eventually revive as a Crimson Head: a far more ferocious undead which can also easily outrun a fleeing Jill or Chris.

Interestingly, if the player strategized properly, you could encounter only a handful of scripted Crimson Heads throughout the entire game; if a zombie was decapitated by a perfectly timed shotgun blast or the downed corpse was doused in lighter fluid and burned to a crisp, then you were safe; no Crimson Heads for you!

However, these resources were both scarce - shotgun shells and lighter fluid - meaning you had to plan carefully which zombies needed to be eliminated and which could be safely evaded. It was one of the best examples of the franchise's patented resource scarcity directly ramping up the game’s tension.

Sadly, that was the Crimson Heads only appearance throughout the long-running series to date. Hopefully, this terrifying and inventive twist on the classic zombie will make a return in the future.
