10 Most Underrated Horror Monsters In Video Games
6. Pious Augustus - Eternal Darkness
Eternal Darkness sets its stall out early when it transforms Pious Augustus - the character you control in the game's opening chapter - from a handsome centurion into the undead monstrosity you see adorning this page. Future characters meet even worse fates, as Pious zombifies, entombs and straight up murders a large portion of Eternal Darkness' playable cast, all at the bidding of the same Lovecraftian god that transformed him into an undead revenant.
A good villain needs to have a tangible impact on the plot and, as the previous sentence indicates, Pious is an excellent bad guy. Pretty much all the horror that occurs over Eternal Darkness' millenia-spanning storyline can be traced back to him, as the former Roman solider delights in inflicting inhuman suffering on the poor sods who make up the rest of the game's roster.
As such, it feels immensely empowering to see his scheming come to an end in the game's finale, as you destroy him and his god with the aid of another eldritch superbeing. (You haven't lived until you've seen a celestial jellyfish amputate a planet-sized scorpion's claw with a portal the size of the sun).
