While Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has received a handful of Game of the Year awards, it also suffered the ire of players who felt cheated at the title's short length and divisive use of puzzles and swordplay. Admittedly, they're right to criticise the indie title in that regard, as the constant reliance on matching shapes in the world that unlock doors to the next part of the map gets incredibly grating in the later hours.

It's what Hellblade does outside of the gameplay that makes it so interesting though, as the way Ninja Theory realises Senua's crippling psychosis is as haunting as it is a great metaphorical representation of the real-life condition.

Watching this tortured warrior battle her inner demons, led by a captivating performance by Game Awards winner Melina Juergens, resulted in one of the most exciting and daring gaming experiences of the year, even if the gameplay itself couldn't quite maintain the same quality.
