Between The Evil Within 2, Wolfenstein 2 and Prey, Bethesda have had an amazing year. However, it's the latter of those titles which was the most impressive, indulging in MetroidVania influences in a way that made the map itself an intriguing puzzle to solve.

Consequently, simply exploring Prey's terrifying space station is enough to make it one of the most memorable games of the year, as no two people will make their way through it the same. Depending on how you build your character, interact with the environment and use your imagination, each new puzzle has a dozen ways to be solved, marking the reboot out as far more complex than your standard sci-fi shooter.

When it comes to sheer surprises, there was no game released this year that managed to constantly pull the rug out from under players like Prey, and its sci-fi throwback mentality not only made it the most underrated game of the year, but one of the best games of 2017 period.
