9. Divinity: Original Sin II

The (somewhat confusingly named) fifth main instalment in the Divinity series, 2017’s Divinity: Original Sin II is well-known to RPG fans, having claimed both critical and commercial success upon release and been continually regarded as one of the best games in the genre.

The top-down, expansive turn-based combat mechanics of the game in combination with its impressively deep character creation and potential narrative threads exemplify some of the best elements of role-playing games.

However, Original Sin II stands out from the crowd further thanks to its innovative co-op features. Playable in full split-screen, both online and local cooperative modes mean that the game can be conquered alone, or with up to three friends, for the entirety of the playthrough or to jump in and assist each other on your quests whenever you like.

It also features multiple competitive modes, meaning if conflicting character backstories and intentions cause your party to become heated, you can duke it out in the PVP arena to your heart’s content!

As far as cooperative RPGs that aren’t MMOs go, you simply cannot do much better than Divinity Original Sin II - and if you’d rather play entirely by yourself, there’s more than enough inherent content to complete solo that there’s no excuse to miss out.
