10 Moves PlayStation MUST Make
1. Tread Lightly Around Developer Acquistion
With Microsoft acquiring mega-level name developers such as Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard (we still can't quite believe that last one is actually happening), it would be tempting to make like a stock-market TV presenter and yell at Sony to "Buy! Buy! Buy!"
And while Sony have made one notable counter-attack (the aforementioned purchase of Bungie), they would be wise to exercise caution with who they buy.
History shows that purchasing developers is a risky business. Venerable game studio Rare went from N64 wunderkinds to doddering also rans after Microsoft plucked them from Nintendo's grasp, while Command & Conquer creators Westwood games were liquidated after failing to appease their new corporate masters at EA.
Sony need to take a leaf out of Nintendo's book and only purchase studios they are sure will be a good fit, as Nintendo did when they purchased long-time collaborators Next Level Games.
To be fair, Sony have been doing well on that front so far. Purchasing Bluepoint Games (Demon's Souls Remake) and HouseMarque (Returnal) were wise moves, and hopefully Sony's future acquisitions will be equally valuable to the company.
