The phrase “Battle Royale” originated in the 1700s as a name for a boxing match with multiple opponents. Over time the term became prominently known for the pro-wrestling multi-man rumble in which four grapplers or more attempt to eliminate each other by throwing their opponents over the top rope.

The year 2000 gave birth to another variation. Battle Royale, a Japanese film by director Kinji Fukasaku, sees 42 high school teenagers that are taken to an abandoned island filled with weapons.

Each participant has a dog collar attached to their neck that will explode unless they ruck until the last person remains standing. Over the next few years, the film became a cult classic and inspired many other flicks to use the same format.

Some could argue that the original Bomberman was the first battle royale game, but it wasn’t until 2017 and the rise of free-to-play free-for-alls such as PUBG and Fortnight did things really kick off. The format has become so prominent that even the most profitable multiplayer franchises like Call Of Duty and Red Dead have adapted it into their match types.
