Games Influenced: Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill

Sweet Home may not have any zombies in it, but it does have plenty of spooky shenanigans and is just as instrumental to the survival horror genre as any of those games featuring brain munchers, if not more so.

The 1989 Japanese film directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa sees a group of filmmakers investigate a mansion filled with valuable fresco paintings, only to be attacked by ghosties. It’s the spin-off game, however, that some people credit as the original survival horror.

Having previously worked with Capcom on Ghouls N Goblins, Tokuro Fujiwara put elements in the game to truly give a horror atmosphere for the player, like limited ammo, find and search quests, and random quick time events.

When the technology became more advanced just a few short years later, Fujiwara began remaking this concept in a game that would eventually become the first Resident Evil.

Thanks to Kurosawa and Fujiwara games have now become the most terrifying medium of entertainment, and younger siblings have been hiding behind the couch watching their big brothers and sisters play ever since.
