10 Movies Which Tried To Capture The Essence Of Gaming

7. Tron

Fascination with the game Pong way back in 1976 was the trigger for the production of Tron, starring Jeff Bridges as programmer Kevin Flynn whose game designs were stolen by a fellow engineer (David Warner in camp villain mode). After being digitized by a laser, Flynn is flung into the computer mainframe and forced to take part in a series of life-threatening games. Made 10 years before The Lawnmower Man, it's notable how much less Tron has aged in the decades since. While that might not be saying much in light of The Lawnmower Man's abysmal effects, Tron still retains a lot of charm, not least on account of Bridges' performance. How much of that charm is on account of nostalgia viewed through rose-tinted glasses is open to debate, but it's still a lot more fun that the more recent Tron: Legacy, which updated the visuals but forgot to bother with a decent story and interesting characters.
