10 Movies Which Tried To Capture The Essence Of Gaming

3. eXistenZ

David Cronenberg is no stranger to exploring the dark side of humanity's flirtation with technology, and with eXistenZ he turns his attention to the interactive, world-changing qualities of video games. Starring Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh as employees at Antenna Research, it explores the indistinct gulf between the game world and the real world and the idea that games might deform reality. There are some notable similarities between eXistenZ and the recent flop Transcendence - both are concerned with the dangers of machinery separating man from nature - but Cronenberg's is predictably altogether weirder. The sense of disorientation as you become increasingly uncertain what is real and what is game culminates in one plot twist after another to the point where it's perhaps too clever for its own good. But it's certainly worth watching, if only for the teeth gun.
