10 Mundane But Incredibly Useful Items In Dungeons And Dragons

9. Hammer And Pitons

A two in one deal here for items. While they are sold separately, you need something to hammer them pitons in, unless of course, that a fighter with the Warhammer feels like helping. Both the Burglar’s pack and the Dungeoneer’s pack contain a hammer and pitons, but don’t worry: you shouldn’t have a problem finding these common items. A character who is qualified could even make their own.

Pitons are made primarily for climbing up mountains, cliffs or the wall of that noble you hate's house. They can be hammered into a surface to provide hand and footholds; they also have holes where ropes can be attached.

Another ingenious use of these items is securing entrances. You know the score: the wizard is out of spell slots, the barbarian needs some healing and you're stuck 60-foot underground. Find yourself a room with one entrance and hammer these through the door frame, floor, or anywhere else that will help the door to hold against rampaging owlbears.
