10 Mysteries Video Games SHOULDN'T Have Answered
8. Who Is The Origami Killer? - Heavy Rain
David Cage's Heavy Rain revolves around protagonist Ethan Mars' desperate fight to save his son Shaun from the Origami Killer, and in the nature of mystery-thriller narratives, players expected to eventually find out said killer's identity.
But given the utter flop of a reveal we ended up with, it might've been best to not even bother.
Heavy Rain's big twist is that the Origami Killer is in fact one of the four characters we've been playing as, private detective Scott Shelby.
That's all well and good, except Cage didn't play fair with his audience, as a scene earlier in the game categorically makes it clear that Shelby can't be the killer, only for players to later realise they were playing the scene from Shelby's twisted, manipulated perspective.
It left a sour taste for many, because any great mystery narrative needs to be guessable by observant enough viewers, but Heavy Rain ultimately took excessive, cheap steps to ensure its big reveal couldn't be predicted.
Really, if that's the road Cage was committed to going down, he should've just ended the game without the killer's identity ever being revealed at all - it would've been a sight less frustrating than this dud of a twist.
