5. Make It Scary

The original Bioshock managed to terrify and shock in Big Daddy sized portions. The heard-yet-not-seen Splicers running around, the lashings of blood on the walls and to this day the absolutely pant-wettingly scary encounters with Sander Cohen and his various creations. As the series progressed the game moved on from the horror aspect and turned into something a bit more lighthearted. Well, as lighthearted as game about civil war in a dystopian ethereal reality can be anyway. Some of the franchise's most standout memories are from the original Bioshock's more tense moments: encountering a Big Daddy for the first time, likewise for a Splicer, or how about your run in with Dr Steinman? These were great moments. Any new developer taking the reigns could do a lot worse than bringing the series back towards the survival horror genre.
