Silent Hill and its publisher Konami had been placed on a downward spiral in the seventh generation of gaming. Weaker releases and a botched HD re-release had made the industry rather reluctant to create scary games for fear of losing profits.

However in 2014, an unassuming demo called P.T found its way onto PlayStation 4. It was thick with atmosphere and creeping dread, impressing many gamers. Once they unravelled its mysteries, it was discovered to be Silent Hills, a return to series form from video game auteur Hideo Kojima.

After many years of stagnation, Silent Hills looked like the game we had all been waiting for. The promise on display in the initial P.T demo spoke of a game that would bring back the survival horror genre that had been thoroughly abandoned in the early 2010s.

In one of the most crushing disappointments in gaming history, Silent Hills was cancelled by Konami in April 2015. The publisher was widely criticised by both fans and journalists alike, which contributed massively to their rapid downfall. What could have been one of the finest horror experiences in gaming met an abrupt demise. At best, the legacy of Silent Hills lives on in the latest Resident Evil games and smaller indie productions.
