10 NPCs That Broke Video Games
8. Helman Ghorst - Total War: Warhammer III
The difficulty of AI factions in Total War games is usually the result of the game giving them powerful buffs that boost their armies and their economies. In the case of Helman Ghorst, the legendary lord from the Vampire Counts factions, it's simply the result of buggy mechanics.
As a necromancer, Helman Ghorst has the ability to revive dead units and replenish his damaged armies faster than any other faction in the game. It's not an ability that's unique to Ghorst; however, due to a mixup with some numbers and values, his powers are much more potent.
Ghorst's regeneration doesn't just heal his units; it allows them to stay in the game forever. His bugged replenishment rate allows his armies to revive themselves even after the player has defeated them, potentially locking you in an infinite loop of battles that can only end with your eventual defeat.
This is why, when you fight Ghorst, you have to make sure he doesn't get a chance to regenerate. Otherwise, your campaign will be a neverending cycle of killing crappy skeleton units, only to see them come back to life to rattle your bones.
It's like a sad Halloween party of fantasy warfare.
