2. Fallout 3: We Are Not Alone
Morbidly intelligent, the Fallout series is known for its hidden areas and references to other media, and is a veritable playing field for Easter egg junkies and fans of in-jokes. One of the finest comes in Fallout 3, and represents an answer to one of mankind's most enduring questions: are we alone in the universe...? An unmarked location (unless using subsequent DLC) is the crash site of a UFO that was referred to in a terminal in the Citadel, but never addressed by in-game issues on Fallout 3's initial release. Those eagle-eyed gamers who found it were treated to some unique loot, as well as the sight of a dead alien, which couldn't be looted sadly. The Easter egg of course offered an early hint towards the final add-on in the game's life, Mothership Zeta, which took the player to space, and which removed the ship and replaced it with a beacon and fast-travel point to the mothership itself. The Aliens and UFO design adhere to the Googie aesthetic that perpetrates the entire game, and the absence of any indication on the map to its presence made it a welcome encounter for those who discovered it on the game's initial release. Even now for those who haven't invested in the DLC add-ons, it's a nice element to find without guidance.
