10 Obscure Video Game Endings You've Never Seen

9. The Chopper Flies Off Without You - Firewatch

Tomb Raider Underworld
Campos Santos

The brilliantly atmospheric adventure game Firewatch ends with fire lookout protagonist Henry being evacuated from the Wyoming forest as it's consumed by a raging fire.

A helicopter shows up, the player climbs aboard, and that's the end of the game. Simple.

But not entirely dissimilarly to Shenmue, players who decide to take their time will end up being punished for their lack of urgency.

Once the chopper arrives, if you hang around for two minutes without boarding you'll trigger a secret ending where the chopper takes off without you.

The game then abruptly cuts to the end credits, sparing you the gory details of what follows, but it's abundantly clear that Henry is left to burn to death.

It's a shame developers Campo Santo didn't flesh this scenario out a little more to give reckless Henry a concrete ending - or at least let us continue playing until Henry succumbed to the fire - but it's still an intriguingly bleak alternative to Henry's rescue.
