Another of the big video game plot holes, this one involves Jack Marston.

The controversy revolves around Jack’s transformation - going from a mild-mannered teenager with scholarly aspirations to a hardened gunslinger that rivals his formidably skilled father - within only three years.

Three years, however, is more than enough time.

The United States army can take a civilian and train them to be proficient with a rifle within two weeks. While Jack’s training was nowhere near as advanced, he was trained to shoot and hunt by his father. And in spending much of his childhood among outlaws, he would have absorbed much of their doctrine and tactics. Given three years to practice it is no surprise that he grew to be as skilled as John.

As for motivation, losing a Father and having to comfort and live with a grieving mother will do much to change a man and his priorities, including leading him to kill.

While suddenly stepping into the shoes of a vengeful, badass Jack after having only seen him as a ‘boy’ can be jarring, the change is quite plausible, and with Jack’s upbringing, arguably inevitable.
