10 Of E3's Worst Video Game Showcases Yet

1. Sony's PlayStation 3 Unveiling, 2006

Sony, full of themselves after the Playstation 2 set sales records, stepped into E3 2006 acting like the kings of the show. Crowd-goers watched their reveal in awe, but for all the wrong reasons. Sony triumphantly announced the successor was a huge gamble that would potentially set the entire company to fall.

While Sony fired on all cylinders for games, products such as Eight Days would never see the light, whilst Square Enix's Final Fantasy Versus XIII would hit a development slump of epic proportions. It finally launches this year as Final Fantasy XV for the Playstation 4.

Sony proceeded to reveal that, due to the revolutionary new "Cell processor" and Blu-ray discs, the console's launch price was set at a stunning $499/$599. The Xbox One was lambasted for a $499 price point in 2013; asking for $599 in 2006 was TOTALLY FLIPPING INSANE.

Sony's attempt to revolutionize everything backfired. The PS3 almost never recovered from it, as the PS3 went on to undersell competitors for the entire console generation, being just too damn expensive. The confusing processor temporarily shunned third-party developers. Even worse, the Cell processor was far less powerful than first thought, so the PS3 went on to technically underperform in the face of the Xbox 360.

It's a small miracle that the PS3 was, despite the tough launch, overall a success for the company. The Xbox's failure in Japan meant a dedicated overseas audience that kept the device afloat, and thanks to quick revisions and price cuts, Sony is still selling slimmer, cheaper PS3 models to this very day.
