9. Commander Shepard - The Emotionless Shell (Mass Effect)
Mass Effect is a test case for a video game which offers up the option of a male or female protagonist, and the female equivalent is easily the better of the two. Jennifer Hale's gutsy performance as the female Shepard is just light years ahead of the male Mark Meer version, which is extremely wooden and meshes awkwardly with Shepard's already generic, buzz-cut grunt look. His voice has the same boring cadence through pretty much every line of dialogue during the games, and though one can argue it suits his no-nonsense demeanour, it's just not very interesting to listen to. To avoid falling asleep during the dialogue segments, I instead will opt for "FemShep" as fans love to call her, who without question has far greater conviction and emotion. Instead, Male Shepard is boring, bland, completely lacking in personality and adhering to most of the stereotypes we associate with a soldier of this kind.
