10 One-Of-A-Kind Horror Video Games
1. Detention
There are times when history and gaming can go hand in hand. This is particularly evident in FPS games like Call of Duty or Battlefield, but horror is also no stranger to taking true life events and converting them into nightmare fuel. One of the most compelling and memorable examples of this is the 2017 Taiwanese horror Detention.
The game is a 2D side scroller set in a tragic historical period from the 1960s known as the White Terror, which saw Taiwan under martial law. The characters of Wei and Ray are two students who find themselves trapped in an alternate and haunted version of their school full of terrifying creatures known as The Lingered.
You progress through solving puzzles, and as you do so, the story becomes more apparent. It's a heartbreaking tale of young people being repressed by a militaristic government and the paranoia that living in such fear can create. The game explores the trauma of the period through its creepy art style, narrative and a focus on folkloric spirits.
Its historical connotations are subtle enough that you can still have a frightening time without knowing about the context, but having that knowledge in the back of your head makes the experience all the more haunting.
