10 One-Of-A-Kind Horror Video Games
6. Paratopic
This is certainly not everyone's cup of tea.
You'll either be absorbed entirely into this fever dream of a game or turned away by its slow crawling pace and artistic style. It's the kind of thing that will challenge you in a way that very few titles do, chucking epic scares along the way to keep you invested.
Paratopic gives you an eye into multiple stories that all connect with a vague string. You'll take on the role of a smuggler transporting mysterious videotapes, a birdwatcher chasing a crow in a forest and an assassin in a diner. It flickers between each of these plots with little chronology, encouraging you to piece the overarching narrative together yourself.
While the 32-bit art style is certainly memorable, the game itself is a strange experience as it plays with pacing in such an unorthodox way. You're informed at the beginning of the title that there is no saving feature, meaning once you've started, you'll have to play the whole thing (less than an hour) in one sitting.
The game truly tests your patience, as there are times when the plot is deliberately grinding, with you waiting or driving for extended periods doing precious little.
However, these moments become hypnotic, and it makes the explosions of action and scares all the more shocking.
