10 One-Of-A-Kind Video Game Mechanics
4. Roguelike Rhythm - Crypt Of The NecroDancer
This entry is pretty unique as rather than doing something completely original, it instead takes two existing genres and jams them together like Frankenstein's monster. The craziest thing, however, is that it works perfectly. So, get your swords and your best dance moves ready.
Crypt of the NecroDancer is a roguelike dungeon crawler combined with a rhythm game. How does that work? Well, you explore dungeons and battle monsters, but you can only move or attack if you match up with the beat. As such, you've got to pay close attention to the absolutely banging soundtrack from Danny Baranowsky and perform your moves accordingly.
Juggling the responsibilities of navigating the dungeon and sticking to that sick beat is, naturally, one hell of a challenge. However, it feels entirely worth it in those exhilarating moments when you hit a grove, matching the rhythm and kicking the crap out of enemies in perfect harmony.
Rhythm games and roguelikes are about as far removed from each other as video game genres can be, but sometimes opposites attract.
