10 One-Of-A-Kind Video Game Mechanics
3. Interactive Film Footage - Immortality
Immortality is a title that pushes the boundaries of gaming so intensely that some might argue it shouldn't even be called a game. Still, no matter how you feel, there's no denying it's a horror experience unlike any other.
This video game tasks you with solving the mystery of the disappearance of a fictional actress. To do so, you search through film reels from three of her movies, starting with one clip and finding more through pausing and clicking on items or people of interest.
This leads to a simple yet nuanced loop - review the footage, find areas of interest, discover more footage, and so on. Of course, you will encounter sinister things the deeper you look.
Now, live-action actors in gaming have historically given players the ick. But, the game's creator (Sam Barlow) has an evident affinity for interactive film video games, as seen in his previous works, Her Story and Telling Lies. This game pushes that to the max, with the excellent performances reinforcing Immortality's one-of-a-kind gameplay.
Anyone who plays games with the intention of living out power fantasies or seeking high-octane thrills will find little to enjoy here. However, you'll be enthralled by it if you adore solving mysteries and challenging what it means to be a gamer.
