10 Open-World Video Games You Must Play Before You Die

8. Far Cry 3

For a game that is six titles in, the fact that the third game in the series is still the best is saying something.

Rook Island is one of the most memorable open-world locations in the last generation, and something the Far Cry series has yet to improve upon, even if the maps keep getting bigger and bigger.

The thing that sets apart Far Cry 3 and it's open world is survival. Players genuinely have to hunt animals, find resources and craft new equipment in order to stand a chance in the game, and that's something no other game in the series has managed to replicate since.

Playing as Jason Brody and watching his story unfold through all of the killing is also another thing that makes the open-world worthwhile. All of the gameplay activities feed into this plotline of Jason slowly becoming a killer, so it all makes sense thematically as to why he'd be doing all of the outposts and missions on the island.

For a game that's mostly remembered for the bit where you burn weed fields to Skrillex, it's pretty cool to see just how well-thought out it really is.

Jumping through portals, swinging through cities, destroying beings made of darkness and occasionally shooting a gun or two. I also write about games.
