In space, no-one can hear you scream - because they've all been ripped apart and strung back together by an unidentified alien parasite.

When Isaac Clarke arrives on the USG Ishimura, he is quickly set upon by gangly, blood-splattered creatures with razor-sharp knives of bone in place of their hands. These are the necromorphs - or, more specifically, the former crew.

Isaac learns that a mysterious alien monolith was retrieved from the planet Aegis VII, and the expedition brought about a shipwide massacre, the entire crew being converted and subsequently butchering each other.

Like the Chimera, many types of necromorph exist, some involving more than just a single body. From the common Slasher and the rampaging multi-corpsed Brute to larger horrors such as Tripods and the terrifying Übermorph, not an ounce of the dead is wasted in building the necromorphs' nightmarish legions. Babies and dogs even have to watch their backs.

What really distances these beings from their human origins is that the true nature of their transformation isn't fully revealed until Dead Space 3, keeping players guessing that whole time. The condition is, indeed, alien, and not exclusively harmful to humans, either. They may be made of human flesh, but is there any humanity left inside their necrotic minds?
