10 Outdated Video Game Design Tropes That Must Die In 2017
6. Unlockable Items Only Available After Completion
In the days of season passes and pre-order bonuses, unlocking a new outfit or weapon via actual gameplay is quite rare and really gives a sense of accomplishment – you truly feel like you’ve earned that item.
However, this good feeling gets lost a little when you unlock something by completing absolutely everything in the game.
It sounds strange – you’ve beaten the game 100%, you should be happy; it's literally everything you can do – but that’s why the accomplishment is lost. What’s the point of getting a new outfit or weapon after you’ve done everything else? You’re not likely to play that game again after putting so much time in, so you’re never going to really use that new item.
You’ll usually play for a few minutes with what you worked so hard to get, but it’s a hollow feeling now that there’s nothing left to do in the game. Most of the time players will just lament the fact that this really useful item wasn't available earlier, as it would have made getting to 100% completion a lot easier.
The achievement/trophy for fully completing the game is more than enough for players to feel accomplished, so just drop these extra 'incentives'.
