10 Overlooked Video Games That Were WAY Ahead Of Their Time
5. Skygunner
Man, Atlus had a rough go of it trying to get people to play their games pre-Persona 4. Granted, a lot of it was due to poor marketing, as your scribe only knows about this game because I got it for Christmas as a lad. Fortunately, this quirk of fate exposed me to one of the most underrated games on the PS2. And that is a long list.
While not the best handling airplane game out there, it handles more than adequately for what it's going for. And the safety nets the game gives the player make up for any near deaths you suffer for making a wrong move. Everything else is absolutely immaculate, with fun dogfighting action punctuated by meaty sfx and vibrant music.
All topped off with a bizarre but appealing art style. While the character art takes a bit of getting used to, the ship and plane designs are beautifully detailed and rendered in-game.
Skygunner was far ahead of its time as an RPG airplane shooter, and definitely deserves a place alongside other PS2 cult classics.
