While it isn't the variant seen in the most recent Gears' games, in the original entry this feared weapon was a different beast.

The Gnasher could down you at range and blow you to chunks close-up. This is a shotgun that was ridiculously strong even by video-game shotgun standards.

All online games became a tale of two weapons, players who found peace at a distance with the lancer assault rifle, and the people who won the match that swarmed the battlefield with the Gnasher. You didn't even really need to aim, if you blasted in the general vicinity of your foe it sent their viscera flying.

The gun is still a riot today with players able to charge a team and easily wipe them out with a barrage of pellet fire, but they eventually introduced the Sawn-off variety that stole the Gnasher's point-blank potential to allow at least some semblance of balance to the close-up range fighting.

In the old days of Gears of War, the online play was frantic, violent and it was dominated by this gun mowing through players with ease in the games rather tight, pocketed maps.
