10 Overpriced Video Game BS You Should AVOID
4. Resident Evil 4 Remake's $3 Weapon Upgrade Tickets
Resident Evil 4 Remake received justifiably rapturous reviews when it released earlier this year, though the post-release period wasn't without controversy due to one especially cheeky bit of business on the part of Capcom.
A mere two weeks after the game's release, Capcom announced the availability of "Exclusive Upgrade Tickets" - paid DLC which players could purchase to instantly upgrade their in-game weaponry.
The tickets cost $3 each or $10 for a bundle of five, and so to max all of the game's 20 upgradeable weapons, you'd need to spend somewhere between $40 and $60 depending on your willingness (or not) to bulk-buy.
Many players balked at Capcom charging so much money for effectively time-savers to prevent players grinding for hours to upgrade each weapon the hard way.
That they also only plugged these microtransactions into the game weeks after reviews dropped made it seem especially calculated, that the publisher knew it would dent the game's upfront reception.
Even though Resident Evil 4 isn't an inherently grindy experience for those who simply want to play the story, allowing players to cut through the busy-work by opening their wallet almost always comes across as deeply cynical, if not outright scummy.
