Sonic fans are a weird bunch - that combination of 'the way things used to be' along with a character that defined their childhoods has lead to a huge amount of people who'll run out and buy any new property, even though aside from Generations there's not been a solid entry in over a decade. Even Generations had to lean back on the short-limbed original portrayal to score some favour points, as after millions of us saw the abomination that was Sonic kissing a Princess in 2006's 360-exclusive, it was one hell of a sour taste that would never go away. Was Sonic ever that great though? At least he's always had a bit of 'attitude', zipping along at lightspeed and flicking peace symbols at any passers-by, although it feels these days like he's just one "Whatever man" or "Cowabunga, dude!" from being a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - and we all saw how well they worked earlier this year. Even Sega don't seem to know what to do with the Blue Blur, rebooting him yet again into another 3D attempt with the obviously-named Sonic Boom (that's also going to be a TV series), when all we really want is for them to knuckle-down and fire out a slickly-produced 2D title that advances the speed-based gameplay into the new generation.
