While they're best known for the deviously difficult Soulsborne titles, FromSoftware have created plenty of other excellent games, with the likes of bombastic action game Ninja Blade and ghostly VR outing Déraciné being just some that have slipped under the radar for most players.

However, it's the Japanese developer's acclaimed Armored Core series that mostly goes overlooked by contemporary audiences, the first of which being one of the best.

Set within a dystopian near future, this unsung classic put players in control of their own giant mech (the eponymous Armored Cores) as they took on various missions for warring corporations.

Although graphics haven't aged well since releasing in 1997, gameplay was remarkably ahead of its time. Not only was there an incredible depth to the customisation for players to design their mechs how they saw fit, but the narrative would also unfold based on which of the available missions you chose to undertake. More importantly, missions themselves were varied and tonnes of fun to play.

With the Armored Core VI becoming a huge hit earlier this year, this is the perfect time to revisit the game that started it all.
