10 Painfully Overlooked Video Games From Iconic Studios
7. Edge Of Nowhere (2016) - Insomniac
Between Spyro The Dragon, Ratchet & Crank, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac have no shortage of beloved classics, and critical gems.
However, lesser-known title Edge Of Nowhere stands out from this expansive catalogue, as one title that never received much attention.
A VR horror game for the Oculus Rift, this title was unlike anything else the studio has made before. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s novella In The Mountains Of Madness, the plot follows protagonist Victor Howard as he sets out on an expedition to Antarctica in search of his missing fiancée. Before he can find her, though, a plane crash strands him in the snowy wilderness where he finds himself facing various kinds of monstrous horrors.
With the world warping and twisting around you across a lengthy six-hour story, it's never clear how much of what's going on is real or part of Victor's deteriorating sanity. By putting players directly into this Lovecraftian nightmare via VR, they become fully immersed within the inescapably chilling atmosphere, made all the better by superbly creepy sound design.
While not their best game, Edge Of Nowhere is nevertheless a shining example of what Insomniac can achieve.
