10 Painfully Slow Openings That Nearly Ruined Great Video Games
8. Final Fantasy XV
The 15th entry to Square Enix's Final Fantasy series was meant to be a game for long time fans and new players alike, and true, gameplay wise it was accessible for all. But the pacing of the story really dragged, and was a major turn off for many new comers.
Rather nicely, there are 15 chapters in Final Fantasy 15. However, the first couple - Chapter 1 specifically - are truly oh so slow. Prince Noctis and his three bodyguards are travelling across Eos to get him to his wedding on time. Chapter 1 sees them depart from their city of Insomnia then breakdown pretty immediately. The boys faff around repairing the car, unsuccessfully try and board a boat, waste time fishing - y'know, that completely useless in-game skill - before turning around to drive back to Insomnia.
Where were all the crazy god-like beings? Where were the giant cities? The dungeon diving?
Yes, it's slow, encouraging the player to explore... but FFXV is a long game, and many players didn't finish it; the stumbling opening has a large part to play for that. Oh and not to mention all the stopping at petrol stations you have to do, which hurts the pacing even more.
