The phenomenal performances, the story that winds through a fairly long period in time in a brutal game world but never overstays its welcome, and the characterisation of its heroes is almost without comparison. These elements succeeding the way they do ensures that you feel Joel’s desperation, his growing affection for Ellie, and every twinge of fear that death is just around the corner.
