Anyone remember when Sony released a whole bunch of indie games under the "minis" label? Like the online flash space, there was a lot of forgettable fluff to be found here, although the occasional gem did rise up.

Enter 2010's Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, a pacy platformer that's so charming, so fluid, and so gosh-darned stylish that Kinda Funny's Greg Miller once claimed he was "addicted" to it. Now there's a cover quote.

You play as the Duke, a vampire who wakes to discover that, oh no! His princess has been stolen! And a monster (probably) did it! From here, you hunt down these beasts and chase them up a series of vertical stages, with the goal being to double-jump on each monster three times before they have a chance to flee.

"Addictive" truly is the word to describe this game, with the Duke able to max-out his combo by touching each platform just a single time. This isn't necessary for completion, but you'll want to replay each level over and over until you perfect them, adding an extra layer of depth to this simple, highly polished gameplay loop.

Developers Mediatonic would eventually go on to make Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a game we suspect you might have heard of. But to this day, Monsters is arguably the studio's strongest effort.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
