10 Perfect Video Games (You've Never Heard Of)

8. Armed With Wings: Rearmed

Not that we've played all of them, but we feel pretty comfortable in saying that 99% of online flash games aren't worth your time. Sure, they might be alright for killing five minutes on your lunch break - or wasting an entire IT class at school, as many of us did - but they're hardly the stuff of gaming greatness.

The Armed With Wings franchise is an outlier here though. It began life in 2008 as a series of decent online flash games, but its true potential was only realised when Super Sun Studios brought Armed With Wings: Rearmed to Steam in 2017.

Rearmed puts you in the blood-soaked shoes of a badass samurai warrior, as you hack-and-slash your way through 40 levels on a 2D plane. Combat is simple, yet it feels meaty and satisfying, with each swing of your sword also painting a clear streak through the game's gorgeous black-and-white world.

Oh, and you also have an eagle companion that can solve puzzles and distract enemies. A pet eagle! Why don't more games have pet eagles?

We can't make promises of course, but it's highly likely that Rearmed will be one of the most stylish games you'll play all year. From its gameplay to its graphics to its funky, retro-modern soundtrack, it really is a work of art.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
