10 PlayStation 5 Exclusives We Know Are In Development
3. SOCOM
Now this is one of the most interesting rumours out there right now. Word on the pixelated street is that Sony is looking to revive the SOCOM franchise to put its foot firmly in the multiplayer genre.
Over the course of nine years, ten SOCOM games were developed and published by Sony, with diminishing returns. Ten games in nine years is insane, though it's worth noting that four of them were on the PSP. Most of the series was developed by Zipper Interactive, a Sony-owned studio out of Washington that has since been closed. The last game produced was SOCOM 4 U.S. Navy SEALs in 2011, which failed to light the world on fire.
SOCOM is a recognised brand with a lot of potential for a reboot. And it seems like that is exactly what Sony is attempting to do. Some believe Guerrilla Games is actually working on the reboot, as opposed to a new Killzone game. That's certainly possible because it knows, more than any other Sony studio, how to make a shooter and has recently hired some multiplayer folk from around the industry.
Sony could also be outsourcing development on the reboot. Regardless of where it comes from, SOCOM is just too well-known a property to let stay dormant.
