5. Silent Hill
Konami's mission statement for Silent Hill was pretty obvious from the get go; make everything as terrifying as possible. Despite being written off as a Resident Evil clone, the original Silent Hill won people over with a number of psychological scares which haunted us for days. When the overworld of a game is covered in a dense fog that makes everything unbelievably creepy, you know you're in for a rough ride. Arguably the best survival horror game of all time followed - Silent Hill 2. Keeping in line with the series, the atmosphere was phenomenal, constantly keeping you on edge and the way the game ties horrific imagery with the story is unbelievable. Silent Hill 3 followed but was criticised for a lack of innovation and following these initial games, the series began to focus more on action and combat rather than puzzles. Silent Hill Homecoming, in particular, noticeably takes the series in a new direction, making it almost unrecognisable. Thankfully, the future looks bright for Silent Hill. Having presumably wrapped up work on Metal Gear Solid 5, Hideo Kojima has taken the series under his wing with the help of horror director Guillermo del Toro; a combination that set the internet alight when revealed. Playable teaser P.T featured little in the way of gameplay outside of exploration, but it does point towards a Silent Hill game that fans can return to with glee - depending on how gleefully you can return to a maze of terrifying, foggy streets.
