10 Popular Video Games Developers Abandoned
6. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
The surprise star of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was its token minigame, Gwent. Sure, Geralt's "adopted" daughter Ciri may need rescuing from the eponymous villains, but surely that can wait until he's defeated a shopkeeper dressed mainly in underwear at a collectable card game?
Gwent was so successful that CD Projekt Red expanded upon its mechanics and created a standalone, free-to-play online game, first trialled in closed beta on PC in 2016 and eventually fully released multiplatform in 2018.
Sadly, in December 2019, the developer announced it was to end console support later that month, effectively abandoning PS4 and Xbox One players in favour of concentrating on PC and mobile development. Even though they were given the option to transfer their progress to a GOG account and continue playing on a computer, it's hard not to think any console-exclusive fans have been hard done by with this decision, especially considering the mobile version is currently limited to iOS. Console player with an android phone? Tough luck. It's back to fighting strangely clothed AI in single-player mode for you.
